Passengers flying with easyJet to and from the Canary Islands will soon be able to enjoy high-speed internet during their flights, following a new agreement between the British airline and Elon Musk’s SpaceX.
The low-cost carrier has announced plans to introduce Starlink satellite-powered wifi across its entire fleet, allowing passengers to browse the internet, stream films and television programmes, play online games and work while travelling.
It will be the first time easyJet has offered onboard internet connectivity; it is a huge upgrade for passengers travelling on its European routes, including services the Canary Islands.
The rollout is scheduled to begin during the first half of 2027, with the technology gradually installed on the airline’s Airbus A320, A320neo and A321neo aircraft.
EasyJet expects the installation programme to be completed by early 2028, meaning passengers may not have access to the service on every flight immediately.
What will passengers be able to do?
Starlink uses a network of low-orbit satellites to provide high-speed internet with connection speeds and response times designed to be comparable to those available on the ground.
Passengers will be able to use their own phones, tablets and laptops to access streaming platforms, browse social media, play online games or catch up on work during their journey.
The new connectivity will also allow travellers to check live flight information through easyJet’s website or mobile app, access weather forecasts and transport information for their destination, and order food and drinks from their seats.
This could be particularly useful for holidaymakers heading to the Canary Islands who want to check airport transfers, accommodation details or local weather before landing.
A major upgrade for easyJet passengers
EasyJet chief executive Kenton Jarvis said the partnership is designed to meet the growing expectations of both holidaymakers and business travellers.
The airline carries approximately 100 million passengers each year, and the introduction of onboard wifi forms part of its efforts to improve the overall flying experience.
SpaceX president and chief operating officer Gwynne Shotwell said the Starlink system would provide uninterrupted connectivity throughout all stages of a flight.
For passengers travelling between the UK and the Canary Islands, the upgrade means staying connected during their journey could soon become a normal part of flying with easyJet.
EasyJet has not yet confirmed whether passengers will be able to use the new Starlink wifi free of charge or whether an additional fee will apply. Further details are expected ahead of the rollout in 2027.
