The Canary Islands are set for another hot day today, Thursday, with calima returning to higher levels of the atmosphere bringing haze and temperatures climbing to 34°C in parts of the archipelago, according to the latest forecasts from AEMET.
The highest temperatures are expected in inland Fuerteventura and the midlands of Gran Canaria, while much of the rest of the islands will enjoy sunny skies, with only some early morning and evening cloud in northern areas.
Light haze is also expected over higher ground, particularly in Gran Canaria, which could reduce visibility and make conditions feel warmer.
At sea, north-easterly winds of Force 4 to 5 will create slight to moderate seas, easing to lighter and more variable conditions along south-western coastlines. A one-metre north-westerly swell is also forecast.
Island-by-island forecasts for Thursday 16th July 2026:
Tenerife
Cloudy intervals are expected below 700 to 800 metres on the north coast during the early morning and evening, with mostly sunny skies elsewhere.
Minimum temperatures will rise slightly, particularly across the midlands, while daytime temperatures will remain similar across most of the island. Highs of around 30°C to 32°C are possible in eastern areas and across the south.
Some of the warmest locations may not drop below 24°C to 26°C overnight.
Moderate north-easterly winds, occasionally strong on the east coast and around the north-west tip of the island, are expected. Higher ground will see light to moderate south-westerly winds, while light sea breezes develop along western coasts.
Gran Canaria
Northern coastal areas below 600 to 700 metres will see cloud early and late in the day, while the rest of the island will remain mostly sunny.
Light calima is expected over higher ground, with temperatures rising across inland and mid-altitude areas. Highs of 34°C are forecast for the Tirajana basin, the south-east, parts of the western interior and possibly lower areas around Tejeda. Temperatures above 30°C are expected across much of the southern, eastern and western interior.
Night-time temperatures may remain between 24°C and 26°C in the warmest areas, bringing another tropical night.
Strong north-easterly winds are expected along the north-west and south-east coasts, with locally very strong gusts during the afternoon.
Lanzarote
Mostly sunny with some cloud over northern areas early and late in the day. Temperatures will remain steady or rise slightly, with 30°C to 32°C expected in the south-east. Moderate north-easterly winds will strengthen inland during the afternoon, with the possibility of locally very strong gusts.
Fuerteventura
Mainly clear skies with some early cloud in the west. Temperatures will rise slightly across most of the island, reaching 32°C to 34°C in inland southern areas. Coastal parts of the south-east could also exceed 30°C. Moderate north-easterly winds will become strong around the south of Jandía, where very strong gusts are possible later in the day.
