More than 10,000 people took part in the Fiesta de la Bici in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria earlier today, Sunday, turning streets normally dominated by traffic into a huge cycling route through the capital.
The event, one of the main activities organised in the city for European Mobility Week, began at 11:00am with a redesigned route intended to be more central and accessible than in previous editions.
Cyclists started and finished close to Parque Romano at the junction with León y Castillo, with the route taking participants through parts of the city centre and along the Avenida Marítima.
The scale of the event required a substantial traffic operation, with Policía Local officers and municipal services managing road closures and diversions across the lower part of the city.
Restrictions affected several important routes, including sections of León y Castillo and the Avenida Marítima, as well as access to parts of the GC-1 and GC-2. Several municipal bus services were also diverted during the event.
This year's programme was designed as more than simply a mass bike ride. Activities around Parque Romano included workshops and events aimed at families and younger participants, forming part of a weekend programme promoting cycling and alternative forms of urban transport.

More than 10,000 men, women and children took to the capital's streets for the event.
Former professional cyclist Joseba Beloki, who finished on the Tour de France podium three times during his career, also took part in the weekend's cycling activities in Las Palmas.
Organisers used the event to highlight the growth in cycling in the capital, where bicycle use is reported to have tripled between 2011 and 2025.
The Fiesta de la Bici formed part of European Mobility Week, which runs from 16th to 22nd September and is being marked with a programme of transport and mobility activities across Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
