Tenerife is facing an orange rain warning on Sunday as storm Bruna moves across the Canary Islands, with up to 100 millimetres of rain expected in 12 hours.
The warning is due to run from midnight until 6.00pm on Sunday, 8th November, across Tenerife, including the north, the metropolitan area and the island’s eastern, southern and western slopes.
AEMET’s thresholds indicate the potential severity of the conditions; they do not mean that every area will receive the same amount of rain. However, the worst of the rainfall is expected in the west and south of the island.
AEMET also warns of the possibility of very heavy showers, with up to 25mm in an hour in parts of Tenerife. The rain is forecast to arrive with thunderstorms and strong winds.
The north of Tenerife is also under an orange wind warning for Sunday, with gusts potentially reaching 90 kilometres per hour. Other parts of the island included in the warning have a yellow wind alert, with gusts of up to 70 kilometres per hour. A separate yellow warning for thunderstorms is due to cover Tenerife.
The Canary Islands Government will place Tenerife under a rain alert from 9.00pm on Saturday, as the storm moves in from the west. The island’s emergency plan will come into force at midnight on Sunday.
From that time, access to tracks, paths and trails in protected natural areas will be prohibited. Campsites and recreational areas will close, and activities including canyoning, climbing and outdoor sporting events will be suspended.
Access to the Barranco de Masca and Barranco del Infierno will also remain closed.
Authorities warn of possible flooding, falling rocks and trees, and rapidly rising water in ravines. Residents and visitors should avoid unnecessary journeys during the worst conditions, stay away from ravines and exposed coastal areas, and follow instructions from emergency services.
