The Canary Islands Government has officially lifted the rain pre-alert affecting Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and La Graciosa, following an improvement in weather conditions over the weekend.
The Directorate General of Emergencies confirmed that the pre-alert ended at 12 noon yesterday, after updated meteorological information indicated that the conditions which prompted the warning had passed.
The announcement comes as residents and holidaymakers enjoy today's national bank holiday, with generally improving conditions expected across the archipelago, although occasional showers remain possible.
The pre-alert had been introduced on Friday (9th October) following forecasts of locally heavy showers associated with unsettled weather across the islands.
The precautionary measure covered Lanzarote, La Graciosa and Fuerteventura, together with northern areas of Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
However, the cancellation does not mean completely dry weather is expected everywhere.
TENERIFE:
Cloudy in the north, possible showers in the south
Tenerife will experience cloudy conditions across northern areas today, with occasional light rain possible in mid-altitude locations.
Southern and western parts of the island should see intervals of brighter weather, although cloud is expected to develop around midday.
An isolated shower cannot be ruled out in southern areas during the afternoon.
Temperatures are expected to range between 21°C and 27°C, and northeasterly winds will be generally light to moderate, strengthening later in the day.
GRAN CANARIA:
Some rain possible despite improving conditions
Northern Gran Canaria will see cloudy skies, with occasional light rain possible in mid-altitude areas, elsewhere, there will be a mixture of cloud and brighter intervals, although afternoon cloud development could bring showers to inland and southern areas.
Temperatures in are expected to reach approximately 26°C, and northeasterly winds will strengthen during the afternoon, particularly in southeastern and western areas.
LANZAROTE:
Brighter spells expected during the afternoon
Lanzarote will experience variable cloud cover during the morning, with longer sunny intervals developing later in the day.
Conditions are expected to become brighter during the afternoon, particularly as the cloud breaks up.
Temperatures in Arrecife are forecast to range between 21°C and 27°C. Moderate northeasterly winds are expected, increasing during the afternoon.
FUERTEVENTURA:
Variable cloud and isolated light showers
Fuerteventura will experience cloudy intervals throughout Monday, with some cloud development during the afternoon.
An isolated light shower is possible, particularly in southeastern areas.
Temperatures are expected to range between 20°C and 26°C, while northeasterly winds will be light to moderate, strengthening later in the day.
Rainfall recorded during the weekend
The unsettled weather brought measurable rainfall to several parts of the Canary Islands.
According to AEMET observations reported by RTVC, Tuineje in Fuerteventura recorded more than 20 litres per square metre on Saturday.
In Gran Canaria, Teror recorded more than 17 litres per square metre, while Valleseco registered approximately 13.2 litres.
Tenerife also experienced rainfall on Friday, with approximately 12 litres per square metre recorded in La Laguna and almost 10 litres in La Victoria de Acentejo.
Although these totals were not exceptional across the entire archipelago, the possibility of localised heavy showers had prompted the precautionary pre-alert.
