Prosecutors are seeking seven years in prison for a 19-year-old man accused of attempting to murder a minor in Las Verónicas, Playa de Las Américas.
The case relates to an incident in February in the well-known nightlife area in South Tenerife, which allegedly began when an iPhone was stolen from a young woman in the street.
According to the prosecution, the accused grabbed the phone from the woman's hands and ran away.
The woman's companion, who was a minor at the time, chased after him and eventually caught up with him.
VICTIM STABBED TWICE IN THE CHEST
Prosecutors allege that the accused suddenly turned around without the victim anticipating the attack, produced a knife and cut him on the chin.
He then allegedly stabbed the teenager twice in the left side of his chest.
The woman continued pursuing the alleged attacker, unaware at that stage of the seriousness of her companion's injuries.
When she caught up with him, prosecutors say he threatened her with the knife but did not physically injure her.
The stolen iPhone has still not been recovered.
PROSECUTORS SAY THERE WAS A 'REAL RISK TO LIFE'
The injured teenager required treatment in an intensive care unit and took up to 50 days to recover from his injuries.
According to the prosecution's medical assessment, the wounds were serious and potentially life-threatening, creating what prosecutors describe as a "real and objective risk to life".
Without urgent specialist medical treatment, prosecutors say his condition could have developed into serious respiratory and circulatory complications and ultimately resulted in his death.
ACCUSED WAS ARRESTED IN ITALY
The 19-year-old was subsequently arrested in Italy and is currently being held in provisional custody without bail.
He has submitted a letter apologising to the victims and deposited €31,000 towards compensation.
The amount exceeds the current assessed value of the injuries and the stolen phone and has been handed to the victims.
Prosecutors consider the alleged offences to constitute robbery with violence or intimidation and attempted murder, while recognising the payment as a mitigating factor for repairing the damage caused.
The trial is scheduled to begin at 10:00am next Tuesday at the Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
The allegations have yet to be determined by the court.
