An 81-year-old woman was taken to hospital after being rescued from the sea at Las Vistas beach in Los Cristianos this afternoon, Friday.
The emergency call came in at 12.33pm. Beach lifeguards gave her initial help before paramedics treated her at the scene and took her by medicalised ambulance to Hospiten Sur.
Her condition was described as moderate at the time she was assessed, and her nationality has not been disclosed.
Las Vistas is one of the main beaches in Los Cristianos, in the south of Tenerife, a popular spot with both residents and holidaymakers.
Other recent rescues in Tenerife
The incident comes after other rescues around the island in recent weeks.
On 7th October, a 24-year-old woman was rescued from the sea in Playa Las Americas after being found struggling about 40 metres from the shore. Six National Police officers entered the water to reach her; she was later taken to hospital.
In September, lifeguards in Puerto de la Cruz rescued a German tourist who had been caught in a current near San Telmo. He was brought ashore without needing medical treatment.
The incidents happened in different places and under different circumstances. They are a reminder that sea conditions can change, and that a beach’s usual reputation does not guarantee the water will be safe on any particular day.
A few simple rules before swimming
Choose a beach with lifeguards where possible, check the flags and follow any instructions from beach staff. A yellow flag means take care; a red flag means do not enter the water. If you are unsure about the conditions, ask a lifeguard or stay on shore.
It is also safer to swim with someone else and keep children within close reach. If someone gets into difficulty, call 112 and alert a lifeguard. Do not put yourself in danger by entering rough water to attempt a rescue.
