The Canary Islands can look forward to sunny spells and warm coastal temperatures today, Saturday 24th October, although northern areas will remain cloudier and stronger winds will develop in exposed locations.
The brighter weather will favour the southern and western coasts of the mountainous islands, while Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will have sunshine mixed with passing cloud.
Some light rain remains possible in northern areas, particularly on higher ground. Light calima will also affect parts of the archipelago, especially at altitude.
The main consideration for outdoor plans will be the strengthening north-easterly trade winds. Gusts could reach 60–75km/h in exposed areas where the wind accelerates around the mountainous islands, particularly this afternoon.
Sea Conditions
At sea, stronger winds will produce choppier conditions in exposed waters, with rougher seas offshore and a north-westerly swell around two metres. Anyone heading to the beach should follow local flags and lifeguard instructions, even where the weather looks sunny.
Today’s forecast for each of the islands:
TENERIFE
Northern Tenerife will have the most cloud, with possible light rain and some brighter breaks around the middle of the day. Conditions could therefore vary considerably between a visit to Puerto de la Cruz or Anaga and an afternoon on the southern coast.
The south and west have the better prospects for sunshine, including the resorts around Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas, Costa Adeje and Los Gigantes. Some middle and high cloud may pass overhead, with light calima in higher areas, particularly above the southern slopes.
Temperatures are forecast to range from 22°C to 27°C. North-easterly winds will strengthen at times on the south-eastern slopes and far north-west, where locally very strong gusts cannot be ruled out. Western coastal areas should have more shelter, with local breezes.
GRAN CANARIA
Low cloud will be more persistent in the north and around Las Palmas, although breaks should develop during the central part of the day. There is a small chance of light rain, mainly in the hills above the northern coast.
The southern resorts, including Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés and Puerto Rico, have a brighter outlook, with mostly clear skies interrupted by occasional middle and high cloud. Light calima is possible at altitude, particularly in the south.
The island is expected to see temperatures between 22°C and 25°C. The north-easterly wind will be strongest on exposed north-western and south-eastern slopes. The south-west coast should be more sheltered, while summit winds will come from the south-east.
LANZAROTE
Lanzarote will have a mixture of cloud and sunshine, with some low cloud around northern and eastern areas early on. Middle and high cloud will feature through the day, rather than completely uninterrupted blue skies.
The outlook remains suitable for sightseeing and outdoor plans around Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca, with temperatures forecast to reach 26°C, with a minimum of 22°C, and daytime temperatures will show little overall change.
A moderate north-easterly breeze will be noticeable, becoming stronger at times on the western side of the island. Beachgoers should choose their spot with wind exposure in mind.
FUERTEVENTURA
Fuerteventura will also see sunny spells between areas of cloud, predominantly at middle and higher levels. Some light calima may give the sky a hazier appearance.
Temperatures are forecast to range from 22°C to 25°C. Maximum temperatures will change little, while minimum temperatures will rise slightly to moderately.
For plans around Corralejo, Caleta de Fuste, Costa Calma and Morro Jable, the breeze will be an important factor. North-easterly winds could become strong at times on both eastern and western slopes, with more exposed beaches feeling considerably windier than sheltered streets and terraces.
