A fire at an abandoned property in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria sent a huge plume of thick black smoke into the sky yesterday (Monday), making it visible from several parts of the city.
The blaze broke out in a property containing tyres and other combustible materials, causing a huge column of smoke as emergency crews worked to bring the situation under control.
One particular concern was the property's proximity to a petrol station, increasing the potential risk if the flames had been allowed to spread.
However, firefighters contained the blaze and prevented it from reaching neighbouring premises.
Seven firefighters deployed
According to information released following the incident, seven firefighters and three fire engines were sent to tackle the blaze.
Crews concentrated on containing the fire within the affected property while protecting the surrounding area.
Despite the scale of the smoke plume and the potentially hazardous location, no injuries were reported.
The fire itself did not break out at the petrol station, and there were no reports that the filling station caught fire.
Black smoke visible across the area
Images from the incident showed dense black smoke rising high above the surrounding buildings, attracting attention from residents and motorists across the area.
The amount and colour of the smoke were intensified by the materials burning inside the abandoned property, particularly the tyres.
Emergency crews remained in the area while the fire was extinguished and the affected area was made safe.
There has been no confirmation at this stage of what caused the blaze.
