A 70-year-old man has been taken to hospital in a serious condition after being rescued from the sea at Los Cristianos beach in the south of Tenerife this afternoon (Friday), while the island remains under pre-alert for dangerous coastal conditions.
The incident happened at around 2:50pm on the beach in Arona, when the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) received reports that members of the public had pulled a man from the water showing signs of a near-drowning.
Emergency operators immediately dispatched the necessary resources to the location given, including a medicalised ambulance, a basic life support ambulance from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), and officers from the Local Police.
Stabilised on the beach
Paramedics treated the man at the scene and managed to stabilise his condition before transporting him to hospital.
Due to the seriousness of his condition, he was taken by medicalised ambulance to Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria for further treatment.
Local Police officers assisted emergency crews during the incident and carried out the necessary investigations into the circumstances surrounding the near drowning.
No further details have been released about his identity or what caused the incident. Authorities continue to remind people to take extra care when swimming or bathing under current weather conditions.
