Fuerteventura could become a filming location for Ridley Scott’s planned adaptation of Treasure Island, with Hugh Jackman reportedly being considered for the role of Long John Silver.
The acclaimed British director is understood to be scouting locations for the Sony Pictures production. The Canary Islands are reportedly under consideration because of their varied landscapes, tax incentives and support for major film projects.
Ridley Scott already knows Fuerteventura well after filming scenes for the biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings on the island in 2014. Industry sources suggest its dramatic coastline and volcanic scenery could now provide the backdrop for his latest project.
Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic adventure novel follows young Jim Hawkins as he searches for buried treasure using a map leading to the mysterious Skeleton Island.
Hugh Jackman has been linked to the role of Long John Silver, the charismatic one-legged ship’s cook who becomes central to the story. However, neither his involvement nor Fuerteventura’s selection as a filming location has been officially confirmed yet.
First published in 1883, Treasure Island remains one of the world’s best-known pirate stories and has inspired numerous film and television adaptations.
If filming goes ahead, the production could bring investment, employment and international exposure to Fuerteventura. Further details are expected once locations and casting have been confirmed.
