National Police officers have rescued a 24-year-old woman who was struggling to stay afloat in the sea off Playa de las Américas in South Tenerife
The rescue took place at around 1:00am near the seafront and Avenida Francisco Andrade Fumero, after a man alerted officers when he heard a woman crying out from the water.
Visibility was poor, and access to the sea was difficult because of the rocky coastline. Officers eventually found the woman approximately 40 metres offshore, in deep water where they were unable to stand.
She was reportedly struggling to stay afloat and showing signs of drowning, coughing repeatedly and swallowing seawater.
Officers entered the water to reach her, while additional police units were called to assist because of the difficult conditions. A total of six officers from the National Police in South Tenerife were involved in the rescue.
After several minutes, they managed to support the woman so she could keep her head fully above the water. Despite a strong current, officers held onto her and brought her back towards the shore.
Police also requested urgent medical assistance while the rescue was taking place, and an ambulance was sent to the area.
After receiving initial treatment and being stabilised, the woman was taken urgently to Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria University Hospital for further medical assessment.
