A man has been arrested after trying to escape a Guardia Civil checkpoint at the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where officers discovered 4.5 kilos of cocaine hidden inside his vehicle, after he had arrived on a ferry from Gran Canaria.
The arrest was made during a routine customs inspection carried out by officers from the Guardia Civil after officers became suspicious of the driver's behaviour during a brief interview.
According to the police report, the man appeared evasive and increasingly aggressive. He also allegedly provided officers with a false identity before suddenly running from the checkpoint after realising the hidden drugs were about to be discovered.
During the chase, the suspect reportedly resisted arrest and allegedly assaulted several officers, causing them minor injuries before he was eventually detained.
A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered 4.5 kilograms of cocaine, with an estimated street value of almost €280,000.
The drugs were seized, and the driver was arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking, as well as offences linked to resisting and assaulting police officers.
The investigation remains ongoing as officers work to establish how the cocaine was intended to be distributed and its final destination.
