The 23-year-old British man arrested following the death of another British holidaymaker during a fight in Las Verónicas on Thursday morning has been remanded in custody without bail by a judge in Tenerife.
This was confirmed yesterday (Saturday) by the Canary Islands High Court of Justice (TSJC), following the suspect’s appearance before the Arona court, in the south of the island.
The case is being investigated as an alleged homicide.
The incident happened in the early hours of Thursday in the busy nightlife area of Las Verónicas, in Playa de las Américas, one of Tenerife’s most popular tourist hotspots. According to reports, the victim, a 37-year-old British man, died after becoming involved in a fight with another British man, aged 23.
After giving evidence in court on Saturday, the suspect was formally placed in provisional custody, meaning he will remain in prison while the investigation continues.
Early reports suggested that uniformed security staff employed by the clubs in Las Verónicas managed to restrain the alleged attacker, until officers from the National Police arrived at the scene.
Emergency services were also dispatched, but paramedics were unable to save the victim’s life.
The fatal incident has once again raised concerns over safety and violence in Las Verónicas, an area frequently criticised for late-night fights, drunken disorder and crime linked to nightlife tourism in the south of Tenerife.
