An electric scooter rider has been filmed travelling at more than 100 kilometres per hour on a road in Lanzarote, causing concern for other drivers.
The incident happened in broad daylight on the LZ-20 road between Arrecife and San Bartolomé, near the Arrecife wastewater treatment plant, before the Montaña Mina area.
Footage shared on social media shows the rider speeding along the busy road while being filmed from inside a passing car. The passengers can be heard reacting in disbelief as they display the vehicle’s speedometer to show the speed being reached.
According to those filming, the electric scooter appeared to be travelling at around 100km/h while moving through regular traffic on the main route.
The video has caused outrage online, with many drivers describing the situation as extremely dangerous and calling for action against the rider. Concerns have also been raised about the growing misuse of high-powered personal mobility vehicles on public roads.
Although electric scooters are becoming increasingly common across the Canary Islands, Spanish traffic laws place strict limits on where and how they can be used. Standard scooters are not permitted to travel at such speeds or circulate on certain roads designed for faster-moving traffic.
The incident is likely to reignite debate around road safety and enforcement involving electric scooters, particularly in busy tourist areas where traffic levels are high throughout the year.
