Two people have been arrested in Tenerife over their alleged involvement in online calls for looting and disorder in Santa Cruz and Playa Las Americas.
The Guardia Civil says the pair, one of whom is 16, are suspected of leading activity on the island under the name “Blocus”. They are being investigated over an alleged public disorder offence.
According to investigators, encrypted messaging groups and social media were used to encourage vandalism, looting and attacks on police. The Guardia Civil says officers identified the two suspects before the alleged plans could be carried out.
They have confirmed that the arrests took place last night, Friday, after messages circulating online raised concerns among residents, businesses and authorities.
Anonymous calls for gatherings today, Saturday 31st October, had named Calle del Castillo in Santa Cruz and the Golden Mile in Playa de Las Américas. The existence of the messages does not mean that disorder will take place.
Santa Cruz council has confirmed that its Local Police are coordinating with the National Police and the Government Delegation to prevent possible incidents. Some businesses in the capital have also taken steps to protect their premises by boarding up windows and installing heavy security gates.
