A new five-star hotel with 249 rooms is set to be built in Maspalomas after planning permission was granted for a €41.6 million development by Lopesan.
San Bartolomé de Tirajana Council has approved the planning licence for the Hotel Meloneras Boutique, which will be built on a 36,600-square-metre site in the south of Gran Canaria.
Construction is expected to take approximately 36 months.
249 rooms and extensive facilities
Plans for the new hotel include 216 standard rooms, 24 suites, eight accessible rooms and one imperial suite.
The development will also include restaurants, a spa, gym, swimming pools, solariums, gardens and other guest facilities.
More than 9,260 square metres of the site will be landscaped, while the project also includes 102 parking spaces.
The proposed building will use a stepped design intended to integrate the hotel into the different levels of the site.
More than 250 jobs expected
The council estimates that construction and operation of the hotel will generate more than 250 direct and indirect jobs.
The €41.6 million investment is also expected to generate work for construction companies, installers, suppliers, maintenance businesses, transport operators and other companies supporting the hotel once it opens.
The development further expands Lopesan's presence in Maspalomas and Meloneras, one of Gran Canaria's principal tourist areas.
Another Lopesan hotel getting €2.4 million upgrade
The council has also approved continued renovation of Lopesan's Abora Interclub Atlantic Hotel in San Agustín.
That project represents a further investment of €2.4 million and includes upgrading the hotel from three to four stars.
Work will bring 24 currently unused accommodation units back into service alongside improvements to façades, terraces, waterproofing, installations, bathrooms and furnishings.
Unlike the new Meloneras development, the San Agustín project will not increase the hotel's authorised number of rooms or accommodation places.
The two approvals represent a combined investment of approximately €44 million in hotel construction and modernisation in the south of Gran Canaria.
