The Canary Islands are set for a scorching day today, Friday, with calima, clear skies and temperatures expected to climb to 39°C in parts of Gran Canaria, according to the latest forecasts from AEMET.
Heat warnings remain in force across much of the archipelago, with temperatures expected to reach 35°C in several areas. The hottest conditions are forecast for Gran Canaria, while Tenerife, La Gomera and Fuerteventura are also expected to see temperatures well into the mid-30s.
Moderate north-easterly winds are expected across the islands, becoming strong at times on south-eastern and north-western slopes of the mountainous islands, inland southern Lanzarote and southern Jandía in Fuerteventura, where isolated very strong gusts are possible during the early hours.
At sea, AEMET forecasts north to north-easterly winds of Force 4 to 6, with moderate to rough seas and a north-easterly swell of one to two metres.
Island-by island forecasts for Friday 31st July 2026:
Tenerife
Mostly clear with some high cloud and occasional low cloud affecting northern coastal areas early and late in the day. Calima is expected over higher ground and may be significant across the midlands and summit areas.
Temperatures will remain steady or rise slightly in the north, while little change is expected elsewhere. Large areas of the midlands and higher elevations are forecast to reach 32°C to 34°C, particularly around the metropolitan area and on eastern, southern and western slopes, where temperatures could locally reach 35°C or 36°C.
Moderate north-easterly winds will strengthen at times along the south-east coast and the far north-west, with the possibility of isolated very strong gusts during the early hours.
General temperature range: Low of 24°C and high of 32°C.
Gran Canaria
Mostly clear with some high cloud and low cloud affecting northern coastal areas early and late in the day. Calima is expected across higher ground and could be significant inland and at summit areas.
Temperatures will remain similar or rise slightly in the north, with a more noticeable increase inland. Southern areas will see little change.
Northern midlands, particularly the Agaete Valley, are expected to exceed 34°C, with isolated highs of 37°C. Southern and western midlands and higher ground could reach 37°C to 39°C.
Minimum temperatures in these areas may remain between 26°C and 28°C overnight. Moderate north-easterly winds will become strong at times on south-eastern and north-western coasts, where very strong gusts are possible during the early morning.
General temperature range: Low of 23°C and high of 31°C.
Lanzarote
Mostly clear skies with some high cloud and occasional low cloud affecting northern coastal areas early and late in the day. Calima will remain at higher levels.
Temperatures will change little overnight, while daytime highs will rise slightly, particularly across inland southern and eastern areas. Temperatures of 30°C to 32°C are expected inland and along the south-east coast, with isolated areas reaching 34°C.
General temperature range: Low of 23°C and high of 34°C.
Fuerteventura
Mainly clear with some high cloud and occasional low cloud on western coasts early and late in the day. Calima will affect higher levels.
Temperatures will remain steady overnight before rising slightly inland. Highs of 34°C are expected in inland and south-eastern parts of the island. Moderate north-easterly winds throughout the day.
General temperature range: Low of 21°C and high of 31°C.
