Families in Tenerife will once again be able to apply for financial support towards childcare and nursery costs after the Cabildo officially approved a new edition of its “Cheque Guardería” scheme for the 2026/27 school year.
The Tenerife Cabildo has confirmed an initial budget of €1.3 million for the programme, although that figure could rise to €2 million if demand is high. The grants are designed to help families cope with the rising cost of early years childcare and education.
Eligible families could receive up to €800 to help cover expenses linked to nursery schools and childcare centres. The funding can be used for enrolment fees, childcare, meals, hygiene products and school clothing.
The scheme is also intended to help parents balance work and family life, allowing more families to continue working or studying while their children are cared for in educational environments.
One of the main features of the programme is that parents can continue to choose the nursery or childcare centre they believe is most suitable for their child, rather than being limited to specific providers.
According to the Cabildo, more than 3,000 families across Tenerife have already benefited from the scheme since it was first introduced. Applications for the scheme rose by 36% last year compared with the previous year, prompting the Cabildo to expand the programme further.
Officials say they hope to support more than 6,000 families during the current government term as childcare costs continue to rise for many households across the island.
Applications for the new grants are not yet open, but the Cabildo has confirmed that the application period will begin on the first working day after the official rules are published in the Provincial Gazette of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The deadline for applications will remain open until 31st October 2026.
Families interested in applying are being advised to monitor official announcements closely for details on eligibility requirements and the documents needed to complete the process.
