Playa de Las Gaviotas has been temporarily closed by the Ayuntamiento de Santa Cruz de Tenerife after concerns were raised over possible rockfalls near the beach access road.
According to the council, signs of instability were detected on the hillside next to the road leading to the beach, specifically near Playa Chica, prompting an immediate preventive closure on safety grounds.
Local Police officers evacuated people from the beach on Wednesday before sealing off the area while technical inspections and stabilisation work are carried out.
Safety Measures Activated
Santa Cruz mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, explained that emergency protocols were activated as soon as the possible landslide risk was identified in order to prevent any danger to beach users and motorists accessing the area, and that public safety remains the council’s “absolute priority”.
Bermúdez described the closure as a “preventive and responsible measure” designed to allow rapid intervention and ensure the beach can reopen safely as soon as possible.
Emergency Works Planned
Meanwhile, councillor for Strategic Planning, Environmental Sustainability and Public Services, Carlos Tarife confirmed that municipal technicians had identified signs of instability on the slope overlooking the access road.
He added that the council will now process an emergency contract to carry out urgent stabilisation works aimed at preventing rocks from falling onto the road leading to Las Gaviotas beach.
The council says updates will be provided as work progresses and the beach will only reopen once technical reports confirm the area is completely safe for public access.
