The Guardia Civil is investigating after around 20 kilos of cocaine were discovered floating in the sea near Corralejo in the north of Fuerteventura.
The package was spotted by a local boat operating in waters close to the town, in the municipality of La Oliva. Crew members alerted officers after finding the suspicious bundle drifting at sea.
Police have now launched an investigation to determine where the drugs came from and how they ended up in the area. The cocaine was reportedly packed inside a floating bundle, commonly linked to international drug trafficking routes.
Investigators believe the discovery highlights the Canary Islands’ growing role in global cocaine trafficking operations due to their strategic location between Europe, Africa and the Atlantic.
The unusual circumstances surrounding the find have also fuelled speculation that traffickers may be using the Canary Islands as a temporary base or transit point for smuggling operations.
Authorities are continuing patrols and monitoring activity in the area as part of ongoing anti-drug operations around the islands.
