Drivers were forced to brake suddenly on a busy Lanzarote motorway this morning (Wednesday) after a woman was seen walking in the middle of the carriageway near the island’s airport.
The incident happened on the LZ-2 motorway heading towards Tías, close to Lanzarote Airport, and caused major traffic delays as vehicles slowed down to avoid hitting her.
Footage sent to local media showed the woman walking between lanes while traffic built up behind her. At the time of writing, it remains unclear why she was on the motorway.
The situation created a serious risk both for the pedestrian and for motorists travelling through the area.
Walking on motorways and dual carriageways in Spain is strictly prohibited and can result in fines of up to €100. Authorities also warn that failing to wear a reflective vest on these roads could increase the penalty to €200.
Drivers travelling near Lanzarote Airport experienced delays following the incident, although no injuries or crashes have been reported.
