Cinema is returning to El Muelle Shopping Centre in Las Palmas this autumn, with Odeon Multicines planning to open a new state-of-the-art complex in October, more than three years after Cinesa closed its screens there in May 2023.
The company is currently aiming to open the new cinema on the top floor of El Muelle, next to the Port of Las Palmas, on 12th October, although the date could be pushed back depending on the completion of the final construction and installation work.
Even if there is a delay, Odeon expects the cinema to be fully operational before the end of October.
Premium seats and latest cinema technology
One of the biggest attractions of the new Odeon cinema will be its focus on technology and comfort.
The company says the complex will feature latest-generation giant screens, surround sound systems and premium seating, following the modern cinema format it has introduced at other locations across Spain.
Odeon's newer cinemas typically place greater emphasis on larger, more comfortable seating and an upgraded viewing experience compared with traditional auditoriums.
Final details about the number of screens, total seating capacity and layout of the El Muelle cinema have not yet been officially announced.
Will films be shown in English?
One question that will be of particular interest to foreign residents and visitors is whether the new cinema will offer VOSE screenings, meaning films shown in their original language with Spanish subtitles.
This is particularly relevant for British and other English-speaking residents who prefer to watch Hollywood releases in English rather than dubbed into Spanish.
Odeon has not yet announced the specific programming for El Muelle or confirmed how many, if any, original-language screenings will be available.
There are also calls for the new cinema to include independent and arthouse films alongside major commercial releases, particularly following the closure of Multicines Monopol.
Part of major transformation at El Muelle
The cinema forms part of an extensive redevelopment of El Muelle Shopping Centre that began in July 2024.
The renovation has included improvements to flooring, restaurant areas and communal spaces as the centre looks to strengthen its leisure and dining options and encourage visitors to stay for more than just shopping.
Odeon is one of the centre's major forthcoming openings, alongside the Limón Loco children's activity park.
El Muelle's location also makes the new cinema particularly accessible. The shopping centre is next to the cruise terminal, Santa Catalina transport interchange and Poema del Mar aquarium, attracting both local residents and tourists visiting the capital.
