Two popular beaches in Tenerife have been temporarily closed to swimming today (Wednesday) following water-quality tests, with red flags raised at El Médano in Granadilla de Abona and El Socorro in Los Realejos.
At El Médano, Granadilla de Abona Council ordered the temporary closure after routine analysis detected levels of intestinal enterococci above the permitted limit.
The test recorded 210 CFU per 100ml, slightly exceeding the maximum permitted level of 200 CFU per 100ml.
As a precaution, the council has prohibited swimming and raised the red flag while further testing is carried out.
A second water sample was taken today, with the beach expected to reopen once laboratory results confirm that the water is again suitable for swimming.
El Socorro also closed
Meanwhile, El Socorro beach in Los Realejos has also been closed to swimming following its latest water-quality analysis.
Los Realejos Council said routine testing resulted in the bathing water being classified as low quality, prompting the temporary prohibition.
The restriction came into force at 1:30pm today and, according to the current municipal information, is expected to remain in place until Friday 25th September, subject to satisfactory testing.
The two closures are separate incidents and there is currently no indication that they are connected.
Both beaches are popular with residents and visitors. El Médano is particularly well known for windsurfing and other watersports, while El Socorro is one of the north of Tenerife's best-known surfing beaches.
Beach users should obey the red flags and local instructions and wait for confirmation from the respective councils before entering the water.
