Thousands of people lined the streets of Santa Cruz de Tenerife on Friday as Pope Leo XIV made his historic visit to the island, creating scenes of celebration, emotion and anticipation during a day many described as unforgettable.
The visit marked the first time a Pope has travelled to Tenerife, attracting huge crowds from across the island who gathered for hours along the papal route in the hope of catching a glimpse of the pontiff.
City Awakens to a Historic Occasion
From early morning, Santa Cruz took on a very different atmosphere as residents and visitors headed towards the city centre.
Many made their way to the port area to secure seats for the large outdoor Mass, while others positioned themselves along the papal route well before the Pope's expected arrival.
Across the city, people of all ages gathered along avenues, squares and pavements, while balconies and windows overlooking the route quickly filled with spectators.
Excitement Builds Across the Capital
As the morning progressed, crowds swelled around key locations including Plaza Weyler, the Town Hall and the historic Captaincy building.
Many believed the area outside Santa Cruz Town Hall would offer the best opportunity to see Pope Leo XIV up close, as official plans indicated he would briefly stop there to greet local authorities.
Despite some delays to the schedule, excitement continued to build throughout the morning.
With temperatures rising towards midday, spectators sheltered where they could, using fans and umbrellas while keeping a close eye on every passing official vehicle.
The sight of a Guardia Civil helicopter circling overhead only added to the sense that the Pope's arrival was imminent.
Cheers as the Popemobile Arrives
The long wait finally ended shortly after noon when the papal convoy entered Santa Cruz. Cheers erupted along the route as crowds waved, sang and raised their phones to capture the moment.
The open-top vehicle briefly paused as planned before continuing towards the waterfront for the main religious celebration.
Although some spectators wished the Pope had spent longer greeting the crowds, most were simply delighted to have witnessed such a historic moment.

More Than Just a Religious Event
While the visit centred on faith and religion, many attendees felt the occasion carried a broader significance.
For believers, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the head of the Catholic Church in person. For others, including some who do not practise any religion, it was a chance to witness a major moment in Tenerife's history.
The visit also prompted discussion about wider social issues, including migration, which featured prominently during Pope Leo XIV's time in the Canary Islands.
Not everyone supported the scale of the event, with some questioning the reported public cost of around €3 million and raising concerns about issues such as Church reform and social policy.
Nevertheless, the overwhelming mood throughout the city was one of celebration and curiosity, with many recognising that the day would become part of Tenerife's modern history.
A Symbolic Gift for the Pope
One of the most significant ceremonial moments came when Santa Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez presented Pope Leo XIV with a replica of the city's historic Foundational Cross.
Created using 3D digital scanning and traditional silver craftsmanship by Canarian companies, the piece symbolises the origins of Santa Cruz and commemorates the 1494 landing at Añazo that helped shape the city's history.
The gift was intended to represent the heritage, identity and culture of Tenerife, while serving as a lasting reminder of a day that many islanders believe will be remembered for generations to come.
