A police inspector with the Local Police in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in a drug trafficking network following a major operation by the National Police.
The investigation follows several months of surveillance by officers from the Drugs and Organised Crime Unit. The operation took place on Monday in the La Paterna area of the city and remains ongoing, with further arrests not being ruled out.
According to investigators, officers observed suspects allegedly loading a vehicle with cocaine and hashish before transporting the drugs to a property in La Paterna. During the raid, police seized large quantities of both substances and arrested several people on suspicion of drug trafficking.
Among those detained was the Local Police inspector, whose alleged role within the suspected criminal network is now under investigation. The authorities have not released further details because the case remains under judicial secrecy.
The officer was promoted to inspector earlier this year after completing an internal promotion process with Las Palmas City Council. He had previously served as a sub-inspector.
He was also involved in a legal case more than a decade ago. In 2011, he was convicted by the Canary Islands High Court over allegations that he tried to influence colleagues to halt drink-driving proceedings against two motorcyclists. However, Spain's Supreme Court overturned that conviction in 2012, clearing him of the offence.
Police have not yet confirmed the total quantity of drugs seized during the latest operation, and investigators say enquiries are continuing.
