A 21-year-old man has been arrested following the death of a 22-year-old who was seriously injured during an attack in Playa de las Américas, the National Police have confirmed.
The incident happened on 27th August just before 2:30pm on the seafront promenade, close to the Barranco del Rey roundabout in one of the busiest tourist areas in the south of Tenerife.
Police officers responding to the incident found the victim seriously injured. He was initially taken for emergency medical treatment before being admitted to the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital in a critical condition.
Despite efforts to save him, he subsequently died as a result of the injuries he had suffered.
The National Police launched an investigation to establish exactly what had happened and identify the person allegedly responsible for the attack.
Neither the victim nor the arrested man's nationality has been reliably confirmed in the information released so far.
Broken bottle and blood found at scene
As investigators reconstructed the events leading up to the assault, they established the precise area where they believe the attack took place.
Police found a broken glass bottle and a serious amount of blood at the location.
Investigators then gathered information and took statements from potential eyewitnesses who had been in the area at the time.
According to the National Police, those enquiries proved important in reconstructing the sequence of events and establishing the alleged involvement of the suspect.
Officers were subsequently able to identify and find the 21-year-old man believed to have been involved.
He was arrested and brought before the relevant judicial authority.
A judge has since ordered that the suspect be remanded in custody while proceedings continue. Further information is expected as the case proceeds through the courts.
Attack happened in heart of Tenerife's main tourist area
The location of the incident makes the case particularly concerning for residents and holidaymakers in the south of Tenerife, as Playa de las Américas is one of the Canary Islands' busiest resorts and is especially popular with British and Irish tourists.
Its seafront promenade connects some of the most heavily visited areas of southern Tenerife and is normally busy throughout the day with tourists, residents and people working in the resort.
The Barranco del Rey area is close to the boundary between the municipalities of Arona and Adeje and is surrounded by hotels, apartment complexes, bars, restaurants and other tourist businesses.
The attack occurred in the middle of the afternoon rather than during the late-night hours normally associated with incidents in nightlife areas.
