Firefighters were called to a hotel in Costa Teguise during the early hours of this morning after a fire broke out in the laundry room of the Sands Beach Hotel. The blaze was quickly brought under control, with no injuries reported.
The alarm was raised just before 4:30am after the hotel's security guard spotted a large amount of thick black smoke coming from the building and alerted the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre.
Fire crews arrived within minutes, where they were met by the security guard and directed to the basement laundry area. Officers from the Guardia Civil were also there.
After gaining access, firefighters found heavy black smoke filling the room. They ventilated the area to improve visibility and isolated the electricity supply before locating the source of the fire.
The fire affected an area of around one square metre, damaging electrical wiring, electric motors and other equipment inside the laundry room. Crews extinguished the flames before carrying out further ventilation and checks to ensure there was no risk of the fire reigniting.
Before leaving, firefighters advised hotel staff that the damaged electrical installation must be inspected and repaired before being brought back into use.
The incident appears to have been contained to the laundry area, and there has been no indication of disruption to hotel guests.
