The Canary Islands Government has declared a pre-alert for extreme heat across the entire archipelago, with some areas expected to reach temperatures close to 40°C today, Sunday.
The warning officially comes into force at 11:00am this morning (Sunday 24th May) under the Canary Islands’ emergency weather plan (PEFMA), following updated forecasts from AEMET warning of dangerously high temperatures across all seven islands.
Authorities say the heat is being driven by a mass of hot, dry Saharan air that will affect much of the archipelago throughout the day.
Hottest conditions expected in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura
The most extreme temperatures are forecast in the eastern islands, particularly Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, where inland southern areas could see general temperatures exceeding 37°C.
Meteorologists warn that the heat will be especially intense, reaching 40°C, away from the coast, where trapped hot air and strong sunshine will make conditions feel even more oppressive.
Gran Canaria could exceed 34°C
Gran Canaria is also expected to face severe heat, with temperatures forecast to rise above 34°C in inland areas, southern municipalities and west-facing slopes.
The combination of dry air, strong sunshine and warm winds is expected to create uncomfortable conditions across much of the island during the afternoon.

Tenerife and La Gomera also affected
In Tenerife and La Gomera, temperatures are expected to climb above 32°C, particularly in mid-altitude areas, mountainous regions and southern slopes.
Officials warn that higher areas could experience particularly stifling conditions due to the build-up of warm air and prolonged exposure to the sun.
Slightly cooler in La Palma and El Hierro
Although western islands such as La Palma and El Hierro are expected to escape the worst of the heatwave, temperatures could still exceed 30°C in some areas.
The warmest conditions are expected in higher inland areas of El Hierro and on western parts of La Palma.
Health advice for residents and tourists
The Canary Islands Government is urging both residents and tourists to take extra precautions during the heat episode.

Emergency services say the warning has been issued to help local authorities coordinate resources and minimise health risks during the unusually early heatwave.
