Two people have been arrested after a stolen car was involved in a police chase and collision in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Officers are still searching for two other suspects, including the son of the vehicle’s owner, who is believed to have stolen and driven the car.
The incident happened just after 1.30am on Tuesday in the San José area of the city. Local Police officers carrying out routine patrols spotted a vehicle being driven without its lights on and signalled for it to stop.
Instead, the four occupants fled in the car towards Calle Roux con Cerezo. When they reached a sloping section of the road, all four abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot.
However, the group failed to apply the handbrake before leaving the car. The unattended vehicle rolled down the hill and crashed into a police patrol car, causing damage to its front end.
Officers immediately gave chase and managed to catch two of the suspects, aged 20 and 22, both from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The driver and another passenger escaped and remain at large.
Further checks revealed that the vehicle belonged to a woman who was unaware it had been taken. Police also found signs that the car had been tampered with, including damage to the ignition and a forced front window.
Investigators later identified the alleged driver as the owner’s son. Officers recognised him from a previous incident involving the theft of another vehicle in the El Lasso area.
According to police, the woman told officers this was not the first time her son had taken her car without permission. She said he does not live with her, does not have a driving licence, and struggles with drug addiction. She also appealed for help for her son.
The investigation remains ongoing as police work to find the two suspects who escaped.
