A dead shark was discovered on the coastline of Famara in Lanzarote yesterday morning (Monday), in the water near the popular seafront area in front of Costa Famara restaurant, according to reports from the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES).
After receiving the alert, emergency operators notified the island’s environmental services, who attended the scene to assess the situation and begin efforts to identify the species.
At present, officials have not released any details regarding the type of shark involved or the possible cause of its death.
The discovery attracted attention among locals and visitors in Famara, one of Lanzarote’s best-known coastal areas, famous for its long beach and surfing conditions.
Environmental authorities are expected to examine the animal to determine its species and establish whether its death was the result of natural causes, illness, injury or interaction with human activity.
Shark sightings are not uncommon in Canary Island waters, which are home to a variety of species. However, encounters involving dead sharks washing ashore are relatively rare and often investigated by specialists to gather information about the health of local marine ecosystems.
Further details are expected once the environmental assessment has been completed.
