Man arrested in south Tenerife for stalking ex-partner and fitting a tracking device to her car
The National Police have arrested a man in the south of Tenerife on suspicion of stalking his former partner, after a tracking device was found hidden in her car, in a case linked to gender-based violence.
According to an official police press release, the suspect allegedly subjected his ex-partner to repeated monitoring and controlling behaviour following the end of their relationship. Investigators discovered that he is believed to have tampered with her car and installed the device.
Investigation launched after complaint
The inquiry began after the woman filed a formal complaint, reporting that she had been experiencing ongoing surveillance after the breakup. She told officers the situation caused her fear and considerable distress.
Among the incidents described in her statement was an encounter in which the suspect allegedly appeared as she was approaching her car and accompanied her to the vehicle. Despite her requests for him to leave, he reportedly refused.
At that point, the car failed to start, forcing the woman to contact a relative for assistance. The man is said to have left the scene shortly afterwards.
A recovery service later confirmed that the vehicle’s battery had been deliberately disconnected.
That same day, the victim received a mobile phone alert which prompted her to recheck the vehicle. During the inspection, she discovered a concealed tracking device hidden inside the spare wheel compartment in the boot.
CCTV footage key to investigation
Although the woman was initially unable to confirm who was responsible, she proceeded with a formal complaint. A specialist investigative unit then opened proceedings.
Officers located CCTV cameras in the area where the vehicle had been parked. Footage allegedly showed a man accessing both the boot, where the tracking device was later found, and the engine compartment, where the battery had been disconnected.
On the basis of this evidence, investigators identified the suspect and subsequently located and arrested him in the south of Tenerife.
Following his appearance before the judicial authorities, and after the video evidence was examined alongside the suspect’s acknowledgement of the facts, the court imposed a restraining order prohibiting him from approaching the victim.
In addition, the judge ordered he wear an electronic tag, to ensure compliance with the protective measures imposed.
