More than 1,500 homes, bars and restaurants in southern Lanzarote were left without electricity for several hours yesterday, Tuesday 27th October, after an excavator damaged an underground cable in Uga.
The fault affected homes and businesses in the municipality of Yaiza, including the coastal village of El Golfo. It also caused problems with the water supply in parts of the area.
Electricity was restored during the late afternoon after technicians repaired the damaged cable. The interruption had lasted several hours.
Businesses affected during lunchtime
The power cut came at a particularly difficult time for bars and restaurants, with some unable to serve customers normally during the lunchtime period.
Some businesses also reported problems using card machines and other electronic payment systems while the electricity was off.
The cable was damaged during work being carried out by a third party, rather than by the electricity company’s own maintenance teams.
Water supply disruption
The outage also affected the water supply. Emergency officials said yesterday that, even after electricity had been restored, it could take several more hours for water to return to normal throughout the affected area, and potentially until today in some locations.
There has not yet been a confirmed update on whether water has returned to every affected property at time of publication.
