A 17-year-old boy has been seriously injured after falling from a height while kitesurfing at Famara Beach in Lanzarote.
The accident happened at around 6.30pm yesterday (Tuesday). Emergency services were sent to the beach after the alarm was raised with the Canary Islands emergency coordination centre.
Firefighters, rescue teams, two ambulances, a medical helicopter and Local Police officers attended the incident.
Rescue personnel brought the teenager to a place where paramedics could assess and treat him. He was stabilised before being flown by medical helicopter to Lanzarote Airport.
An ambulance and medical team then transferred him to Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital in Arrecife for further treatment.
Similar incidents have occurred elsewhere in the Canary Islands. In February 2021, an off-duty police officer rescued a kitesurfer who was in difficulty following an accident at La Tejita beach in south Tenerife.
In November 2024, a kitesurfer died after being pulled from the water in cardiac arrest at El Cabezo beach in El Médano. Despite attempts by emergency personnel and a local doctor to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
