Residents and holidaymakers across the Canary Islands can expect a noticeably different feel to the weather today, Friday 11th September, as cloudier skies, occasional showers and strong winds replace some of the intense heat experienced during recent days.
According to the latest forecast from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), cloudy periods will alternate with clearer spells across the islands, while weak and occasional rain is possible in several areas.
Temperatures are expected to remain relatively stable or fall slightly in places. However, the respite from the heat may prove short-lived, with another rise in temperatures and a fresh episode of calima forecast over the coming days.
The Canary Islands Government has also downgraded the forest-fire risk situation affecting Tenerife, the western islands and parts of Gran Canaria from alert to pre-alert from 7:00am today.
What about the sea?
AEMET has no coastal weather warnings in force for the Canary Islands through Friday morning, and its subsequent outlook does not anticipate warning-level conditions during the following 24 hours.
Nevertheless, northerly and northeasterly winds are producing choppy conditions in some areas, with moderate to rough seas and northerly swell reaching around one to two metres in exposed waters.
Anyone visiting beaches or rocky coastal areas should continue to pay attention to local flags and instructions from lifeguards.
Island-by-island forecasts for Friday 11th September 2026:
Tenerife
In Tenerife, northern areas will start the day cloudy, with occasional light rain possible during the early hours before conditions become more broken around the middle of the day.
Elsewhere on the island it will generally be clearer, although some cloud is expected during the morning and there remains a small possibility of light rain.
The northeast wind will be one of today's main features, becoming strong in exposed southeastern and western areas. Stronger gusts are also possible at higher elevations.
Temperatures will show little change overall, although maximum values could fall slightly in some inland areas.

Gran Canaria
Northern Gran Canaria can expect cloudy conditions with occasional light rain during the early part of the day, particularly across inland areas.
Cloud will become more intermittent later, while southern parts of the island should see improving conditions after some cloud during the first half of the day.
Northeasterly winds will become strong in exposed southeastern and western areas from around midday, while the mountains could experience very strong gusts.
Gran Canaria remains under a government pre-alert for maximum temperatures in its summits and eastern, southern and western slopes following the recent hot spell, even though they will fall slightly, with a more noticeable reduction possible in the mountains.

Lanzarote
Lanzarote can expect a mixture of cloud and sunny spells, with the north and west seeing more cloud during parts of the day.
Moderate northerly to northeasterly winds are expected, with stronger conditions possible across exposed inland areas.
Visitors planning outdoor activities should therefore take the wind into account, particularly in open or elevated locations.
Temperatures should remain relatively comfortable compared with the extreme conditions experienced earlier this week, although the wind could become particularly noticeable.

Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura will see generally settled skies with some cloudy intervals, although wind will again be an important feature of the forecast.
Moderate northerly or northeasterly winds are expected, with stronger gusts possible in exposed areas, including parts of Jandía and the interior.
Fuerteventura also remains under the Canary Islands Government's pre-alert for maximum temperatures.

Fire risk downgraded
There is also some positive news regarding the wildfire situation.
The Canary Islands Government has ended the alert for forest-fire risk affecting Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and designated areas of Gran Canaria, downgrading the situation to pre-alert from 7:00am today.
The decision reflects the improvement in the combination of temperature, humidity, wind and vegetation conditions following the recent period of extreme heat.
However, a pre-alert means the risk has not disappeared, and residents and visitors should continue to exercise caution in forest and countryside areas.
