Whether you live on the islands and want to get back to the UK for Christmas, or you're planning a winter escape to Tenerife or Lanzarote, the price of the flight can make or break the plan.
The Canary Islands are one of the best-connected holiday spots in Europe, with direct routes from dozens of UK and European airports, so there's plenty of competition.
Finding cheap flights is mostly about timing, picking the right airport and knowing the rules that apply to residents and visitors.
The Canaries don't follow the usual European pattern. Because the climate stays mild all year, winter is high season for northern European visitors, and demand peaks around UK school holidays and the Christmas and New Year fortnight. Summer is busy too, though in a different way, as July and August bring Spanish holidaymakers from the mainland and island families travelling between islands.
That leaves some good-value windows. May and June are often among the cheapest months to fly, with warm, settled weather and fewer crowds. September and early October can be good value before the winter season kicks in, and late November and early December, outside school holidays, are worth checking too.
If your dates are flexible, look at a whole month at a time. Moving a trip by a few days, or flying midweek instead of on a Saturday, often makes a bigger difference than changing airline.
Most international flights land at Tenerife South, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote or Fuerteventura, and fares between them can vary more than you'd expect for the same dates. If your plans are open, compare all four before deciding where to go. Each island has its own character, from Lanzarote's volcanic landscapes to Gran Canaria's mix of dunes and mountain villages.
Tenerife has two airports, and it's worth knowing the difference. Tenerife South handles most flights from the UK and northern Europe, while Tenerife North mainly serves inter-island routes and flights to mainland Spain. Booking into the "wrong" one can add a long transfer across the island.
Back home, departure airports matter just as much. Flights to the Canaries leave from airports across the UK, from Glasgow and Newcastle down to Bristol, and a regional airport can sometimes undercut London. With a flight time of around four hours from southern England, it's worth comparing a few options rather than defaulting to the nearest one.
Legal residents of the Canary Islands who are registered on the padrón can get a 75% discount on flights between the islands and to the rest of Spain. You'll need a residence certificate for travel (certificado de viaje) from your town hall if the airline can't verify your status automatically when you book, and your ID or NIE at the airport. Non-EU citizens generally need long-term residence status to qualify.
The discount doesn't cover international routes, so a flight to the UK is priced at the normal fare. Some residents get around this by flying to Madrid or Barcelona on a discounted domestic ticket and connecting to a separate international flight. It can save money, but you'll be on separate tickets, so leave plenty of time between flights and remember that a delay on the first leg won't automatically be covered by the second airline.
For longer journeys, or trips to places without a direct route, a connection can open up cheaper options. Search engines that combine airlines which don't normally sell tickets together make it easier to find cheap flight tickets, whether you're heading to Northern Europe for a family visit or further afield. As with any self-transfer, build in a generous buffer, especially if you need to collect bags and check in again.
Set price alerts on your main route and decide on a target fare. When it drops below that figure, book. Waiting for a last-minute bargain rarely pays off in peak winter weeks, when flights to the islands fill up early.
Low-cost airlines dominate many Canary routes, and their basic fares usually include only a small under-seat bag. If you're travelling with a suitcase, or bringing back food and gifts for family, add luggage when you book, as it costs far more at the airport. Seat selection, priority boarding and airport parking can also add up quickly, so price the whole trip before comparing fares.
UK passport holders visiting the islands now go through the EU's Entry/Exit System, which has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. On your first entry, border staff take a photo and fingerprints (children under 12 are exempt from fingerprinting), so allow a little extra time at arrivals. The EU's separate travel authorisation, ETIAS, is expected to follow later, so check the official EU website before you travel.
British nationals who live in the Canaries should travel with their residence document (TIE) as well as their passport, as it shows border staff that the 90-day limit for visitors doesn't apply to them.
With a bit of flexibility on dates and airports, getting to and from the islands doesn't need to cost a fortune, leaving more of the budget for the things that make the Canaries special.
