A prison inmate who failed to return from a work-release permit has been arrested in Lanzarote after allegedly carrying out a series of break-ins at storage units in residential buildings across Arrecife.
Officers from the National Police arrested the man at the end of May following an investigation into several thefts involving forced entry into communal storage areas.
The investigation began after a resident reported a burglary at an apartment building. According to police, the suspect forced his way through the main entrance before breaking into a storage room and stealing various items.
CCTV footage helped investigators trace the suspect’s movements and identify him as a known repeat offender with a history of property-related crimes.
Police found and arrested him in Arrecife on 20th May. At the time of his arrest, officers reportedly found several tools that could be used to carry out break-ins.
Further checks revealed that the suspect was serving a prison sentence and had not returned to custody after being granted authorised leave for work at the end of April. He had effectively been on the run for several weeks before his arrest.
The man, who has numerous previous convictions for similar offences, was brought before a court, which ordered his immediate return to prison.
